Malaysia Lifts Restrictions on Grok AI Following Compliance Commitments by X
Malaysia has lifted the temporary restrictions imposed on Grok AI, the artificial intelligence tool developed by platform X (formerly Twitter), after the company committed to full compliance with Malaysian law and strengthened safety safeguards.
The decision followed a meeting between Malaysia’s communications regulator and representatives of X, during which the company pledged to enhance preventive and protective mechanisms against misuse of its AI tools. The regulator emphasized that user safety remains a priority and warned that any future violations of national legislation would be dealt with firmly under existing legal provisions.
The restrictions were originally introduced on January 11, 2026, following reports that Grok had been misused to generate obscene, sexually explicit, and non-consensual manipulated content, including images involving women and minors. Authorities had conditioned the lifting of restrictions on clear evidence that adequate safeguards were in place to prevent recurrence of such abuses.
